The federal government is expected to begin the operation to repatriate Brazilians from Lebanon this weekend, with the evacuation of around 3,000 people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.
The operation is expected to involve 10 to 15 flights, depending on the number of Brazilians who confirm their intention to leave the country and whether the airport in the capital, Beirut, remains open.
The Brazilian community in Lebanon numbers around 20 thousand people, but so far 3 thousand have requested support for repatriation. This number could increase as the operation progresses, or decrease if some of these people manage to leave on their own.
The operation was authorized on Monday by President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, after a conversation with Chancellor Mauro Vieira, who was in New York and met the president on Sunday, in Mexico, where Lula is attending the inauguration of the president-elect. Claudia Sheinbaum.
Itamaraty was working through possible scenarios and evaluating the structure needed to remove the Brazilians, but needed confirmation from the president.
In Mexico, Lula said the withdrawal of the Brazilians was important and that Brazil would carry out repatriation operations where necessary, but he once again criticized the Israeli government.
“What I deeply regret is the behavior of the Israeli government. It is honestly inexplicable that the UN council does not have the moral and political authority to make Israel sit at the table to talk, instead of killing.”
Last Tuesday, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government began land incursions into southern Lebanon, in the border area with Israel, attacking the Hezbollah group. Previously, last week and over the weekend, attacks had been carried out in the same region and in Beirut. Two Brazilian teenagers died in the attacks.
