The project was approved by City Council in July 2023 and sanctioned by Mayor Fuad Noman (PSD). However, the change to the official symbol was the subject of a popular referendum.
At the request of the councillors, the Electoral justice approved the holding of the referendum on 9 April 2024. In July the electoral rules established by the Regional Electoral Tribunal of Minas Gerais (TRE-MG).
To facilitate the choice, voting will be carried out with municipal elections. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, after choosing a councilor and mayor, voters will vote on the possible change.
The phrase “Do you approve of changing the flag of Belo Horizonte?” will be displayed. To approve the change you need to vote 1, and to keep the current flag, vote 2. The voter can also vote blank or blank cancel the vote. The numbers for each option were decided by drawing lots.
For technical reasons, images of versions of the municipal flag will not be displayed on the ballot boxes, but posters with the illustrations will be displayed in polling stations.
