“After” never ends. Diamond Films has released the subtitled trailer for “After – After the Promise,” the fourth highest-scoring film in the romantic franchise of all time. The preview brings the couple Tessa (Josephine Langford) and Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) into an atmosphere of reconciliation, having spent the previous film in constant bickering. But what draws the most attention is the lack of spicy scenes, an attraction that was the draw of the original version.
Anyone who didn’t expect to see Tessa and Hardin again after three embarrassments now has the chance to see the couple make amends and find out why the franchise is called “After”. A word of advice: Hardin is writing a book.
But the hard truth is that the couple’s romance proved to have no future from the first film. With a paltry 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the initial “After” reflects its origins as a fanfic embodying all the clichés of the genre, with a romantic and demure protagonist who meets a handsome rebel and “loses her head”. But the “Fifty Shades of Gray” vibe without perversion and for teenagers thrilled many girls. Thus came the sequel, “After: After the Truth”, considered even worse with only 14% approval. And with just $ 2 million at the US box office in 2020, before the pandemic!
Finally, “After – After Disencounter” managed to achieve the feat that everyone expected: it reached 0% with criticism, keeping the box office of 2 million dollars on the domestic market. Now, the expectation regarding “After – After the Promise” is that it will finally win the recognition that the franchise deserves, in the Golden Raspberry 2023 vote.
Despite the public and critical fiasco, the adaptations of Anna Todd’s books will continue to be produced seemingly forever. There comes a prologue, called – guess what – “Before”, and a new sequel on the couple’s children. They multiply.
The direction of everything is Castille Landon, responsible for this “After – After the Promise”, scheduled for August 25 in Brazil, two weeks before its release in the United States.
