If you cannot show up at your polling station in the 2024 elections, you will need to justify your absence to avoid disputes with the electoral tribunal. The justification is mandatory for both the first and second rounds and can be done practically on the day of the vote or up to 60 days after each round, if you were unable to justify it that day. Furthermore, justification is important for voters who did not transfer their title in time or missed the deadline to change their electoral domicile.
How to motivate your vote: step by step
One of the simplest and most effective ways to justify your vote is to use the application electronic titleavailable free for Android and iOS. On Election Day, simply enable access to your device’s location, allowing the app to identify that you are away from your polling location.
Another option is to compile the file justification formavailable online or at any polling station. In this case it is necessary to show up in person at the polling station with a photo ID.
What to do if you can’t justify it on the day?
If you cannot justify your absence on election day, you will have up to 60 days after each round to regularize the situation, via the e-TÃtulo app or the Electoral Tribunal website. After this period it will be necessary to present a document proving the reason for the absence, such as a medical certificate or travel proof.
Consequences of not justifying your vote
The consequences of not paying the fine are many and range from not being able to obtain documents to not being able to hold public office. See the full list:
- Receive salaries, compensation, wages or proceeds from a public, self-employed or parastatal function or job, from foundations, companies, institutes and state companies of any nature, maintained or subsidized by the State or which perform a delegated public service, corresponding to the second month following the elections.
- Participate in public or administrative competitions of the Union, states, territories, the Federal District, municipalities or their respective authorities.
- Re-enroll in an official or government-supervised educational institution.
- Perform any act for which discharge from military service or income tax is required.
- Obtain an electoral discharge certificate for the purposes of registering candidacies.
- Obtain a certificate of regular voting, justification or payment of the fine in the last round of the last elections or regular presence at the polls or payment of the fine for absence and compliance with the notices for electoral work.
- Obtain any documents from the diplomatic posts to which the person is subordinate.
