The ‘Stranger Things’ Crew Admit They Trolled Fans With Subtitles

The ‘Stranger Things’ crew admitted to deliberately trolling fans with gross subtitle lines.

Subtitles for Season 4 of one of Netflix’s best original series has been a huge hit with fans online with many noticing gems like “wet waving tentacles” Y “the door throbbed wet“.

The author of these great lines, Jeff T., revealed to vulture who has spent years watching ASMR videos to find out which words elicit the biggest responses and admitted that he was trolling the audience with his choice of terms.

“I admit I was joking around with that a bit.“He stated. “Also, in the last year or two, I’ve been watching ASMR broadcasts to find out what words elicit that kind of response in people. ‘Moist’ shows up a lot in those ASMR videos“, he added.

Subtitle QA Editor Karli Witkowska agreed with Jeff, telling the publication that using words like “wet” is meant to make people uncomfortable.

“It’s a word in which I can name six or seven of my friends who don’t like it. It’s supposed to be an awkward situation, and that’s why it was used on the showWitkowska said.

According to the pair, they judge what language to use based on the genre of the show and Jeff T. said he would use different language for a period drama.

“I also try to stick to gender-appropriate language. People mentioned muting, but that compellingly palpable sound is meant to evoke disgust and horror“.

When asked about the popularity of the ‘Stranger Things’ season 4 subtitles, Karli said they were “exceptional news” but that closed captioning is predominantly for the deaf and hard of hearing and that’s why they’re so descriptive, adding, “I’ve never seen anything be so well received.”
