“Náutilus” tells the origin of Captain Nemo and will premiere October 25 on Prime Video
British Prime Video has released the trailer for “Nautilus”, a series inspired by the literary classic “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. Despite being named after the world’s first submarine, created in 1869 in Jules Verne’s fiction, the series preview reveals that it bears little relation to the original story. The trailer features a sort of origin for Nemo and is set years before his best-known adventure.
For those who don’t remember, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” followed the hunt for a mysterious sea monster that had been attacking ships since the late 19th century. In reality it was the world’s first submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo, long before the invention became reality.
The series aims to explore Nemo’s origins as an Indian prince who had his throne usurped. After escaping the clutches of the East India Company, he seeks revenge against the forces that took everything from him, setting sail aboard his epic ship to face great enemies and uncover the secrets of the depths of the sea.
The production recovers the character’s Indian origins, established in “The Mysterious Island”, another Verne book, casting English actor Shazad Latif (“Star Trek: Discovery”) in the lead role. However, the trailer suggests that the character is a thief, who steals the Nautilus from a large shipping company, instead of presenting him as the visionary scientist who created it. The atmosphere is also reminiscent of television adventures for young people, in the style of British productions with classic characters, such as Robin Hood, Sinbad and the Three Musketeers.
The screenplay is by James Dormer, creator of the British fantasy “Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands.” The premiere date is October 25th.
