The case was reported and analyzed by the Superior Council, which decided to dismiss the student; the entity says the case is being handled in secret
A student of the 3rd semester of the Law course at Inspectuniversity located in Vila Olímpia, south of Saint Paulhe was expelled from the institute for allegedly making racist insults against a classmate in the first semester of this year.
The case was reported and analyzed by the institution’s Superior Council, which opened an investigation and decided to dismiss the student in September. The accused, however, obtained a court order and returned to class last week.
The case was revealed by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo and confirmed by Estadao. In a statement, Insper says the case is being handled in secret and, for this reason, he is not authorized to comment on the situation “while the action is ongoing.”
Insper students interviewed by the report, on condition of anonymity, said the student had made racial slurs during a first-semester class this year. They did not name the people involved for reasons of judicial secrecy and to avoid unmasking the offended student.
According to the students, the victim was arguing with a teacher during a lesson and the accused had sent the following message to a group of friends: “Run away, the monkey is pissed off.”
The message reached the victim and a complaint was filed against the alleged attacker.
In a statement addressed to students, teachers and other employees, Insper informed of the expulsion following the conclusion of an administrative proceeding “relating to a case of discrimination” which was “conducted in two cases by collegial bodies of the institute “.
“The matter strictly followed the internal rituals and was handled with the utmost speed and seriousness, guaranteeing the dignity and protection of all those involved”, reads an extract of the statement, sent to the academic community on 1 October.
In the text, Insper defines itself as an institution that does not tolerate any form of prejudice and that is “committed to promoting a safe, respectful and inclusive environment, and the importance of anti-harassment practices”.
Back to school
According to students interviewed by the report, the expelled student filed a moral damages lawsuit against Insper and was ordered to return to class and re-participate in the academic groups she was a part of.
The return of the alleged attacker was mentioned in a statement written by InsperLaw, a law student association, of which the student was a member until her expulsion.
In the text, obtained from Estadaothe institution explains that “by preliminary order of the court, the member dismissed last week will be reinstated on the faculty.” “Despite our regulations and the University Code of Conduct, we were forced to follow the court order, as was Insper,” says InsperLaw.
Students interviewed in the report criticize the student’s return and say the feeling among the student body is one of outrage. As a form of protest, posters criticizing racism and reinforcing the fact that “valuing diversity” is one of Insper’s principles of ethics and conduct were put up on the walls of the university.
