The consumer advocate explains that there is no limit established by law for school rehabilitation

Summary

Tuition increases in 2025 are expected to range between 8% and 10% in different regions of Brazil, above inflation.

Tuition for 2025 is expected to increase between 8% and 10% in the regions of the country, results from a survey conducted by the consultancy company Rabbit. The percentage is twice higher than inflationwhich should close the year at 4.39%, according to the Focus of the 14th.

The survey was carried out by listening to 680 private schools across Brazil. The state of Minas Gerais is the one with the highest percentage increase in corrections, equal to 10%. The Sao Paulo region will have an average adjustment of 9.5%, while Rio de Janeiro, the Central-West, Northeast and North states will have an increase of 9%. Only in the South is the expected adjustment 8%.

According to the Rabbit report, the increase above inflation can be seen as “a way to recover some of the losses that occurred during the pandemic”, a period in which there was an increase in defaults and discounts offered.

The company adds that schools must consider inflation, teacher salary adjustments and improvements in educational structure when calculating the value of the adjustment.

Is there a limit on monthly rate adjustments?

There is no statutory limit on the amount schools can increase tuition. The lawyer specializing in consumer law, Daniele Romano, explains that the only requirement is that the institution informs parents at least 45 days before registration opens.

“This is to allow parents to adjust financially, check whether these values are suitable for the family budget, or even allow the student to transfer to another school that fits the family’s financial capabilities,” he says.

He personally believes that adjustments above 10% are already abusive, but there is no law preventing the school from doing so. Romano gives the example of a family that has two or three children, when adding the adjustments to the monthly fee for each child, it could become unfeasible to keep them in an institution.

In cases like this, however, the lawyer reiterates that the judicial method is not the most suitable.

“Negotiation is always the best thing, it is the healthiest thing in this situation. Because if you get into a legal dispute, it is unlikely that you will receive a ruling so quickly that allows rectification or the application of a certain percentage of rectification. So many parents can come together, arrange a meeting with the school management and reach a common denominator,” he considers.
