what are you talking about

A composer in crisis travels to a coastal village in northern Spain to complete his latest work. Apart from the neighbors, a married couple, there is no one for miles. After a serious accident during a storm, he begins to see terrible visions of them.

Last Night at Tremor, a series created by Oriol Paulo with Javier Rey, Ana Polvorosa, Willy Toledo, Pilar Castro…

A psychological thriller

Last Night at Tremor is Netflix’s latest psychological thriller with its own mystery from Spain. If the story itself is quite fascinating and the actors are good, the plot is slow. very slow.

There is still something that will bring you back. Notable is the main character, Alex (Javier Rey), who may be losing his mind or who has developed an extraordinary ability after being struck by lightning. By the end of episode 2 (of 8 total), we know what it’s about, so it’s not a mystery.

When lightning strikes

When we first meet Alex, he is a musician and songwriter going through a major crisis at home in London. From the opening scene, we understand that this man is not well, even if we don’t have all the elements that allow us to understand why. That comes later in the second episode. Then there’s the time jump.

And a year later, Alex lives alone in a big house in the coastal village of Tremor in the north of Spain, so that they can get together again and finish composing the film’s soundtrack. In his house there is only landline, network and wifi. A somewhat extreme environment, ideal for working alone, but not so good in a crisis. As we will soon discover.

However, everything changes when Alex is struck by lightning one night while returning home from dinner with his neighbors, a slightly older couple, Leo and Maria. After surviving the incredible, Alex begins to walk or perhaps see visions. He sees things that are very real but don’t exist yet.

Does she suffer from a mental disorder like her mother or could she somehow see the future? This is the mystery of Last Night at Tremor at the end of the first two episodes.

Find the meaning

His only neighbors are Leo and Maria, who have become friends over the past few months and live in a large, beautiful modern house. After “love at first sight”, Alex has many “dreams” (or visions?) about them. And usually these dreams/visions end very suddenly.

In addition, Alex met Judy, who runs a hotel in the next town. They are friends with “benefits”. Judy is from Toulouse and is also trying to get her life back together after a car accident that left her deeply scarred. They agreed not to be serious because they both have trauma and issues to deal with in their lives.

Oddly enough, before the lightning struck, Alex heard Judy tell him “don’t leave the house” even though she was actually asleep on the couch. And this sentence will continue on it. Sometimes he listens to him, but if he is not there. As Alex, Javier Rey offers a nuanced interpretation of a broken man.

A slow burn, but with repetitions

Despite the solid performances, watching Last Night at Tremor feels like a marathon. With eight episodes, the duration varies from 1 hour to approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. So this is not a quick view.

There’s no need to rush all at once, but the story can’t be done at such a slow pace. These are long episodes, which means the story builds up slowly. very slow. There is also a lot of repetition.

This is a natural consequence of the main character having premonitions and seeing things before they happen. Unless it’s all happening in his mind? At first, we are not sure.

There’s making a point and then there’s gross overkill. For this series, it was often overrated in terms of repetition. Still good news. It just had to be said in a more effective way!
