Vini Jr’s Ballon d’Or defeat intensifies the behind-the-scenes conflict between Real and UEFA

Florentino Pérez, president of Real, led the founding of the European Super League to overthrow the Champions League, which did not materialize

The world of football met its new Ballon d’Or this Monday (28th). This is the Spanish Rodri, of Manchester City, who overcame Vini Jr and won the trophy. However, Real Madrid was dissatisfied with the result and did not even send their team to the Paris event.

In this way the merengue club’s position highlights a conflict with UEFA that goes far beyond the disagreement on the outcome of the award. A political struggle that exploded in April 2021, when Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid, led the foundation of the European Super League.

The goal was to create an opposition to the Champions League, which permanently shook the Spanish club’s relationship with the largest entity in European football. Before the Ballon d’Or was awarded, Vini Jr was the favourite, and the newspaper “Marca” said that both the Brazilian and Real Madrid were certain of victory.

However, everything changed when, hours earlier, news emerged that Real Madrid representatives would not be traveling to Paris and found the result “disrespectful” (leaked before the event even took place).

“If the award criteria do not proclaim Vinicius the winner, these same criteria must proclaim Carvajal the winner. Since this was not the case, it is obvious that the Ballon d’Or/UEFA does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid is not where it does not is respected,” the club said in an official statement sent to the press.

The club won two awards at the ceremony, but no one was present to collect them. Carlo Ancelotti won the award for best coach in men’s football, and the Merengue team itself won in the club category in men’s football. The boycott surprised the organizers.
