In addition to playing Adam Faulkner-Stanheight in Saw, Leigh Whannell directed horrors like The Invisible Man and Insidious: Inception
Known for playing Adam Faulkner-Stanheight in the first Saw film and director of The Invisible Man (2020) and Supernatural: The Origin (2015), Leigh Whannell gave his opinion on what would be the scariest horror scene of all time.
In an article for The Hollywood Reporterthe filmmaker chose a specific moment of The Enigma of Another Worldreleased in 1982 and directed by John Carpenteras the most horrifying scene in films of the genre.
“The blood test scene in The Enigma of Another Worldfrom John Carpenteris a high point of horror for me. The character of Kurt Russell, MacReadyis using a flamethrower to heat a wire and then stab it into a blood sample collected from each member of the science team,” he stated. “We know that the blood will react and reveal which one has been taken over by the alien, and the suspense It’s unbearable.”
“As a filmmaker, I’m always trying to create scenes that provide suspense, but in a way that’s new. This scene does that really well. It’s so scary, but it’s a unique setting,” he continued. Whannell. “Simply testing each person’s blood becomes the engine of suspense, and it’s simple – but when the scene explodes, it always gets me.”
In a film that is, in my opinion, perfect in every way, this remains the high point. The first time I saw it I could barely look at the screen… but even now, after dozens, if not hundreds of times I’ve seen the film, it still works.
