After the highly publicized trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused him of domestic violence, Johnny Depp left Hollywood. The major studios also parted ways, especially Disney, who would develop a new installment of Pirates of the Caribbean without the cast. But the tide seems to be turning.
The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal that Johnny Depp will return to Hollywood in Day Drinker alongside Penelope Cruz, who he is reuniting with for the fourth time. The two stars have already shared a poster in Blow, the fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean and Murder on the Orient Express.
The film will be directed by Marc Webb, who directed Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield and the next Snow White adaptation with Rachel Zegler and Gal Gabbott. Lionsgate studio is leading the project.
What will the movie be about?
Day Drinker tells the story of a cruise ship bartender who meets a mysterious drinking customer. Two characters become entangled in a crime case and discover that they are connected in an unexpected way.
After the trial, Johnny Depp made a notable return to the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 for the presentation of Maven’s film Jeanne du Barry, which was shown at the opening. He played the role of King Louis XVI. Since then, the actor has distinguished himself as the director of Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which was presented at the San Sebastian Festival.
Johnny Depp said at the Jean du Barry press conference in Cannes that he doesn’t feel like he’s blacklisted in Hollywood. He explained: “What if I feel like boycotting Hollywood? Not at all. I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don’t think about Hollywood. I really don’t need it.”
