A few weeks ago, director Paul Schrader didn’t hesitate to drop Joker: Folie à deux. “I saw 10 or 15 minutes and went out to buy something, came back, saw 10 new minutes. It was enough” – he said later. This time, Quentin Tarantino defends the film, a bitter critical and economic failure.
to the microphone The Brett Easton Ellis PodcastThe Hollywood director of Pulp Fiction and Once Upon A Time… does not hide his enthusiasm: “I really, really liked it. I really liked it. I liked it, very much. I went into it hoping to be impressed by its production, but I thought it was just going to be an eyebrow exercise that wouldn’t work as a movie.“
Compared to natural born killers
He continues: “I’m nihilistic enough to enjoy a movie that doesn’t work that way. It is, in some ways, a huge, gigantic mess. And I did not see him as such an intellectual. I really liked the music sequences in the game. The more mundane the songs, the better.”
The filmmaker compares Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) and Lee (Lady Gaga) to the heroes of Oliver Stone’s Born Killers: “If the first movie is based on Taxi Driver, it’s more like Natural Born Killers, which I wrote myself. These are the natural born killers I’ve been dreaming of seeing. I loved what they were doing. I liked his direction.”
“Todd Phillips is the Joker”
In the rest of the review, Quentin Tarantino even compares director Todd Phillips to the character of the Joker: “Todd Phillips is the Joker. The movie was directed by Joker. The whole concept, the fact that he’s spending the studio’s money—he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it, okay? – And here’s a surprise!“
“This clown comes out of the box, he grabs your hand and you get a 10,000 volt shock just like in the comics. He tells everyone, “Go crazy!” He’s telling the public, Hollywood, Warner and the people in charge at DC. Todd Phillips is the Joker.”
Apparently, Quentin Tarantino’s enthusiasm was not shared by the public. In France, Joker: Folie à deux is poised to agonize over a million. The first one collected 5.6 million at the end of his career.
Joker: Folie à deux is still in theaters.
