Tonight on Amazon: A very solid ’80s spy thriller!

Inspector Arkady Renko is assigned to investigate a triple murder that took place in Moscow’s Gorky Park. In an attempt to lift the veil on this sensitive case, he clashes with the KGB, discovers the involvement of a wealthy American businessman, before realizing that the story also has personal consequences he didn’t expect…

Dead in 2021, Michael Apted remains a filmmaker largely overlooked. A solid craftsman, over a fifty-year career, he made some interesting films, some of which have become classics, such as 1989’s terrifying and thrilling Gorillas in the Mist, which exposed Diana’s struggle to the world. Foss to save the gorillas, played on screen by Sigourney Weaver, who turned out to be one of the best roles of her career.

In 1983, Michael Uphead delivered a very solid espionage thriller, the perfect incarnation of its time, in the midst of the Cold War: Gorky Park. It is one of the last films directed by the great Lee Marvin, who died four years later.

In front of him is the excellent William Hart, who plays the role of Inspector Arkady Renko. Middle: Polish actress Joanna Pakula, who received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her composition. Roman Polanski also recommended him for this role.

Because of the Cold War, the film was shot in Helsinki, Finland, and not in the Soviet Union. Initially, it was planned to shoot Gorky Park in Moscow itself. A clear refusal on the part of the Soviet authorities, who responded most seriously: “There is no crime and corruption in Moscow.

A deftly crafted and effective thriller supported by a solid cast (to which we add, for good measure, the always impeccable Brian Dennehy), Gorky Park can be seen on Prime Video.
