Intel should have focused on artificial intelligence instead of trying to become a contract chipmaker, the founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said on Monday, commenting on the departure of Intel’s chief executive.
Morris Chang, at an event to launch his autobiography, said he didn’t know why Pat Gelsinger left Intel, but that it appeared the American company was looking for a new strategy and a new CEO.
Gelsinger was forced to leave Intel this month after executives felt his expensive and ambitious plan to turn around Intel wasn’t working and that progress was slow, Reuters reported last week.
Gelsinger was trying to restore the company’s leadership in manufacturing computer chips for other companies, a business model known as “foundry” – whose market leadership was lost to TSMC – the largest chipmaker in world contract.
“I don’t know why Pat resigned. I don’t know if his strategy was wrong or if he didn’t execute it well… With respect to artificial intelligence, he seemed to focus more on chip production. Obviously now it seems that (Gelsinger) would have had to focus on artificial intelligence,” Chang said.
“They currently have neither a new strategy nor a new CEO. Finding both is very difficult,” he added.
Intel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
By setting lofty ambitions for manufacturing and AI capabilities among major customers, Intel lost or canceled contracts with Gelsinger and also slighted TSMC, with Chang calling him “a little rude,” according to a Reuters report by October.
