Warning, spoilers! This article will reveal the main elements of Stranger Things season 4. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read it!
Season 4 of Stranger Things introduced the series’ ultimate villain, Vecna—who used to be Henry Creel, then The One (Jamie Campbell Bower) before becoming a monster upside down—an evil entity that has been working in the shadows since the beginning. Episode 7 gave us some high-level information about Vecna, starting with her identity. In episode 9, Vecna explains to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) how she went from Henry Creel to Vecna.
However, some key information is still missing about who will play the central role in the fifth and final season.
Why can Vecna only open portals now?
That’s the question that plagued a lot of fans at the end of season 4, when Vecna managed to put his plan into action. A plan that involves Hawkins breaking in after killing four teenagers. Each death causes a small one to open gate between two dimensions.
In previous seasons, Vecna only uses portals already in Hawkins. The only one who can open and close them is Eleven. But in Season 4, we learn that Vecna absorbs everything it destroys. After Eleven closed the Grand Portal in Season 2, Vecna had only a tenuous connection to the real world. Mind Flayer.
So he needed to strengthen that bond. This happened in Season 3, Episode 7, when a monster created by the Mind Flayer’s powers latches onto Eleven’s leg, leaving a part of itself inside. His missing blood is later seen reacting to Bill’s presence (under the influence of a mind flayer), suggesting that the sought-after connection has been made. Which means Vecna can open its own portals.
This explains why Vecna didn’t attack Hawkins himself earlier. When he was transported upside down, Vecna had no choice but to leave him. So he had to use Mind Flayer to attack Hawkins. He also needed to learn about Eleven’s powers after their first confrontation. thanks Demogorgons And on the Mind Flayer, Vekna began to slowly break down the barriers between the two worlds.
The season 4 finale reveals that Will (Noah Schnapp) is directly connected to Vecna. In fact, Willie has been connected to the Upside Down since the very first episode of the series. First kidnapped by the Demogorgon and then transported upside down, he stayed there long enough to eat the particles of this alternate reality. Then in Season 2, he serves as a holdover for the Mind Flayer.
Chances are, this was all part of Vecna’s plan from the start. While trapped upside down, Will received enough of these particles to intentionally establish a connection to this other world. This bond is strong enough in Season 2 to turn Will upside down and allow his mind to enter his body and use him as a host.

Although the rest of the gang was able to thwart the Mind Flayer’s attack by hosting Will and closing the portal at the end of Season 2, Will’s connection lasted into Season 3 and reappeared before the end of Season 4. The fact that season 4 is ending. Will feels that connection as he storms headlong into Hawkins, suggesting that what started with Will in Season 1 may end in Season 5.
But this raises the question of what role Willy will play in the final matchup against Vecna. Will he be Vecna’s Trojan horse and turn against his friends in spite of himself? Or is her connection an advantage to Eleven and Hawkins’ group, making her a kind of spy who can know what Vecna’s next move will be? We’ll have to wait to find out…
