Filmmaker, however, thinks differently when it comes to choosing a name to represent a certain ethnicity
In their work, Quentin Tarantino typically seeks to cast actors who have the same ethnic origin as a given character. Now, when it comes to sexual orientation, the American filmmaker has a different opinion.
During podcast interview Club Random with Bill Maher (via CBR), Tarantino declared that in the first years of his career, he was not very concerned about the origins of actors and actresses for the characters in his films. However, he changed his opinion over time and believes it is important to choose ethnically correct artists for each role.
The director states:
I have no problem with any actor playing any other ethnicity with everything that has happened so far. Now, in reality, I ask this question: ‘well, couldn’t you find a Mexican to play this Mexican guy?’. Or: ‘you haven’t found a Native American, of all those that exist, you haven’t found one?’. I feel like I don’t want to see an American doing a fake French accent when there are French people and a lot of French actors out there.”
The opinion of Quentin Tarantino It’s different when it comes to choosing a certain artist to be a gay character. For the filmmaker, there is no problem casting heterosexual actors in this type of role.
He justified himself as follows:
This is where I usually draw the line. When it comes to different ethnicities, I can understand. I feel like any Latin American is eligible to play any Latin American. But when it comes to sexual preference, anyone can play this role. There is also the acting aspect to consider. I would be interested in seeing the Al Pacino playing a drag queen, see a drag queen Al Pacinobecause he is a great actor.”
Straight actors in homosexual roles
Throughout the history of cinema, there have been several heterosexual actors and actresses who have given life to homosexuals. The deceased Robin Williamsfor example, played gay characters in three different films. It was the same number of works in which Natasha Lyonne experienced lesbian women.
There are cases of artists who became Oscar winners after working on homosexual characters. Tom Hanksfor example, won the first of his two Oscars for best actor for his performance in Philadelphia (1993). The colleagues Sean Penn and Charlize Theron also won the award thanks to their work in the feature films Milk: The Voice of Equality (2008) and Monster – Killer Desire (2003), respectively.
William Hurt, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Matt Damon, Jim Carrey, Daniel Radcliffe, Sacha Baron Cohen, Richard Gere, Jared Leto, Meryl Streep and Naomi Watts They are other artists who are not homosexual, but have played gay characters in cinema and TV.
