The general is accused by the PF of masterminding a coup plot
The Federal Supreme Court (STF) has maintained the preventive detention of retired general Walter Souza Braga Netto, accused of masterminding a coup plot in favor of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in a custody hearing held this Saturday ( 14).
The session was led by a judge who assisted Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who issued the arrest warrant for Braga Netto at the request of the Federal Police.
Braga Netto, the first four-star general arrested in Brazil’s history, will be detained in Vila Militar, west of Rio de Janeiro, for an indefinite period.
The soldier is one of the 37 indicted by the PF in the investigation into the coup plot hatched after the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 elections. According to the Federal Police, Braga Netto risked carrying out new illicit acts, interrupting the work of Justice.
He was arrested at his apartment in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, which was also the subject of a search and seizure operation.
According to the plea agreement of Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, the general even handed over cash in containers of wine to finance the execution of the plan by military coup leaders of the Army’s special forces, the so-called “black boys”. .
This plot, according to the PF, would even imply the possibility of killing the then president-elect Lula and the vice-president Geraldo Alckmin.
In a statement, Braga Netto’s defense specified that “it will speak about the case after having had full knowledge of the facts that gave rise to the decision issued”. “However, believing in the observance of due legal procedures, we will have the opportunity to demonstrate that there was no obstacle to the investigation,” the statement reads.
The soldier was minister of Civil Housing and Defense in the Bolsonaro government and vice-presidential candidate in 2022 of the far-right leader.
