Anime producers dismantle Brazilian pirated websites

Japanese authorities are looking for alternatives to protect the copyrights of anime and manga authors. And this means, among other things, fighting piracy, inside and outside Japanese territory.

The anti-piracy group Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), for example, just announced that it had blocked 15 websites that were streaming content irregularly. They were in Brazil.

The operation, on behalf of producers Toei Animation, Toho and Bandai Namco Filmworks, took place in early December in cities across the state of Sao Paulo.

Those responsible for the digital piracy pages received visits from the group’s lawyers at their homes. Direct dialogue is intended to be more incisive than sending communications through the Post Office to ask for an end to illicit activities.

Among the targets is the third most visited pirated anime site in Brazil. Traffic data from SimilarWeb indicates that in September, October and November of this year, the 15 addresses received 6.43 million, 9.3 million and 8.34 million visits, respectively. The names of the pirated sites removed were not disclosed.
