Equipment previously used on site limited vehicle speeds to 60km/h, but was removed due to expired documentation. Other radars were also removed for the same reason in the regions near the accident section on BR-116.

THE Earth contacted the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), responsible for managing the stretch, but did not receive a response until the publication of this article. The space remains open for demonstrations.

The Minas Gerais Military Fire Brigade said it was called around 4am to respond to the accident at KM 285 of BR-116, in Lajinha. According to the Federal Traffic Police (PRF), the bus going from São Paulo to Vitória da Conquista (BA) was hit by a block of granite that was being transported by the truck.

From the first information from the PRF it appears that the stone perhaps detached from the body and hit the bus traveling on the highway in the opposite direction. Firefighters were initially considering the possibility that the bus driver had lost control of the steering wheel after one of the tires burst.

With the impact of the granite block under the vehicle, the bus caught fire. A car following closely collided with the rear part of the trailer and the three occupants were rescued in serious condition.

The vehicle was carrying 45 passengers. The health conditions of the truck driver who fled the scene are not yet known.
