The Muggles of the ‘Major League Quidditch’ and the ‘International Quidditch Association’ will adopt a new name this summer
The ‘Quidditch‘, the sport invented by JK Rowling on the pages of her books about ‘Harry Potter’liked it so much in its adaptation to the big screen that it ended up becoming a “real” sport (with the limitation of not being able to fly and stuff). Now, the main Quidditch associations and federations across the globe have agreed to change their name and thus distance themselves from the franchise and its creator. From now on, the sport will be called ‘Quadball’.
The different associations have announced that they are taking this measure to distance themselves from the transphobic comments of the author JK Rowling, but another reason (and, obviously, the main one) is that they do not own the rights to the name ‘Quidditch’. Now it’s understood, right?
in fantasy, Quidditch is a magical sport in which two teams compete to score points by throwing a ball through hoops. And they do it flying on magic broomsticks. Each goal/basket is worth 10 points, but there is a trick. In each team there is a special player, the “seeker”, who passes the balls and turns his attention to the “snitch”a small, slippery golden ball with wings. If he catches it, it’s 150 points and practically assures the victory of his team.
JK Rowling laid the foundation for the magical sport in her ‘Harry Potter’ novels, and later in the volume ‘Quidditch through the ages‘, which breaks down its history and its rules in detail.
His adaptation to reality, known as ‘Muggle Quidditch’, obviously not played flying. Players run while trying to get the ball into the hole. A mixture of rugby, basketball, dodgeball and handball… With a broom between his legs. There are teams all over the world, including the Spanish Barcelona Eagles, the Dementors from Galicia or the Nightmare Grims from Tarragona, among others.
“This name change is a game changer for us, and we’re looking to make the most of it.”, said the founders of the Major League Quadball in an open letter to the players in which they debuted their new name.
