Is there the same drama with your pets every end of the year? We went looking for solutions!
We know what an ideal world would be like: where people are empathetic towards those who suffer from hypersensitivity to sounds, be they humans or animals, and avoid setting off loud fireworks. Unfortunately, the reality is different and, in the case of pets, the stress caused by excessive noise can cause serious problems. To find out how to remedy this situation, we spoke to Cinthia Paiva Pedroso, veterinary science graduate and technical sales and demand generation coordinator at MSD Saúde Animal.
Where does the fear of pets come from?
Cinzia explains that, especially in the case of dogs, popular belief is correct: the loud and unexpected sound disturbs the sensitive ears of our beloved furry friends, because hearing is fundamental for them. And although the risk of a physical reaction, such as seizures, is rare, it can happen. But the big problem with fireworks is the desperation of pets, who, by trying to hide from the annoying noise, can easily put themselves at risk. “It significantly increases the risk of running away from home, of accidents and of being run over, for example, in addition to the extreme agitation that one ends up feeling, which causes tremors and various other symptoms,” warns the professional.
What to do to calm pets?
The expert’s advice is to stay calm and not give in to your friend’s despair. “Preparing pets in advance helps a lot. Educate them with positive reinforcement, offering them a toy or a snack when they get irritated by the noise, for example. And don’t act worried about them when the noise occurs, because the owner’s nervousness can influence their animal behavior. And before the fireworks display, prepare a safe environment for them, away from windows”, he advises.
Another tip is to place in this safe place the objects that the animal likes, such as toys and snacks, and to use sounds that can muffle the discomfort, such as music or television. “If you can’t keep him away from windows, close the curtains to prevent him from seeing flashes of light. And above all, avoid leaving your pet alone on these occasions, because the presence of the guardian in these moments is comforting for him.”
Protectors and sedation
Cinthia says that yes, purchasing pet-specific hearing protectors can help, but unfortunately they won’t completely eliminate the noise. Sedation of pets is also possible, but only in extreme cases and always under the guidance of a veterinarian. “And above all: locking your pet somewhere alone is not a good idea, especially if it is a place he doesn’t know, because all this will strengthen his fear and make the situation worse. Act calmly, keep him company and play at his best For him the best way to deal with stress is to count on the support of his tutor”, he concludes.
