In addition to floods, the National Monitoring and Warning Center for Natural Disasters (Cemaden) warns of the possibility of flooding in the Campinas region
The notice of Civil Protection from Sao Paulo to the city of Campinaswithin the State, on the possibility of heavy rains with “high risk of flash floods and flooding”in the early hours of Thursday 26th, frightened the inhabitants of the region. In fact, for the first time an acoustic signal regarding the risk of accidents was sent to the population’s cell phones. (listen below).
In a statement, the State Civil Protection reported that, at 10.21pm on Wednesday 25th, it “issued the first alarm via Cell Broadcast in a real situation”, which represents a “historic milestone” for the force. “Classified as a severe model, the alert was sent in advance to warn the population of the risk of floods and inundations, valid for 2 hours,” added the Civil Protection.
The alert is based on the analyzes of the National Center for Monitoring and Warning in the event of natural disasters (Cemaden), “which identified a HIGH hydrological risk scenario, with adverse weather conditions and the movement of areas of instability, increasing the potential for flash floods and flooding in the Campinas region.”
The main objective of the alarm, according to the Civil Protection, is to inform the population about the risk and give residents of the region time to take preventive measures that can reduce possible damage caused by the rain.
The press release also states that the system “contributes to the alignment between Civil Protection, local authorities and communities, promoting a rapid and coordinated response”.
But sending the alert also had another result. The loud beep emitted by the notification frightened residents, leaving “Campinas” and “Civil Protection” among the most discussed topics on the Internet. Xformerly Twitter.
