According to the actor and director, the feature film should start filming next year
Mel Gibson gave new details about the sequence of The Passion of Christa film he directed in 2004 and is expected to be continued more than two decades after its release.
During participation in the podcast Joe Rogan Experience, Gibson was asked about the start of filming for the feature film, to which he responded (via The Guardian): “Sometime next year.”
“It requires a lot because it’s an LSD trip,” he explained. “I’ve never read anything like it.”
The actor and director also revealed that he intends to cast Jim Caviezel to play Jesus again, using rejuvenation techniques.
Gibson also said that the film, titled The Resurrection of Christhas “some crazy stuff.” The production is being scripted by him at the company Randall Wallace — with whom he worked Brave heart (1995), for example — and his brother Donald. The focus will be on the three days between Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.
“I think to tell the story right you have to start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, in another realm. You have to go to hell,” he added.
History
The career of Mel Gibson was highlighted with the launch of The Passion of Christwhich earned more than US$600 million at the box office around the world. Two years later, however, the filmmaker became involved in controversy.
In April last year, Gibson thanked Robert Downey Jr. for his support after being arrested for anti-Semitism. He characterized the actor of Oppenheimer as “courageous, generous and kind” in an interview with Esquire (via NME), while talking about when he was sentenced to prison for anti-Semitic comments he made in 2006.
“Once I got involved in a complicated situation that kind of ended my career,” he recalled. “I was drunk in the backseat of a police car and said some nonsense, and suddenly: blacklisted. I’m the poster child for cancellation.”
“A few years after that, [Robert] invited me to some award he was receiving — we always had this kind of up-and-down thing, where if he was doing well, I was falling, and if I was doing well, he was falling,” he continued.
“So basically, I was practically nonexistent in Hollywood at the time, and he stood up and spoke for me. It was a brave, generous, kind gesture. I loved him for it.” Gibson was referring to the awards ceremony of the American Cinematheque Awards 2011, in which Downey Jr. was honored at the annual award and spoke about Gibson during his acceptance speech.
Iron Man’s interpreter asked those present at the awards ceremony to forgive Honey“offering him the same opportunity for a fresh start” as they have given him in the past, “and allowing him to continue his great and ongoing contribution to our collective art without shame.” In the same year, Gibson was accused of assault against his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva (via ABC News).
