The police close a clandestine drug and food supplement factory in SP

Two men have been arrested and inquiries continue to identify others involved in the crime

THE Civil Police of Sao Paulo closed a clandestine factory and seized at least 50 tons medicinesadulterated or expired food supplements, veterinary products, cosmetics and chemical products on Thursday 9th in Jardim Garcia, in Campinas.

Two men, aged 36 and 24, present at the scene were arrested red-handed. According to the accident report, one was the warehouse controller, responsible for managing the incoming and outgoing of goods, and the other had the role of general assistant, assisting in various functions of the factory, from organizing goods to cleaning.

As for the operation, the Public Security Secretariat of the State of São Paulo reported that officers from the city’s 11th Police District were investigating the warehouse where the product counterfeiting scheme took place.

“The goods were stored irregularly. Some of them had labels describing them as carcinogenic, toxic and corrosive. Furthermore, during the searches, the agents identified the direct and inadequate disposal of solid and liquid industrial waste on the ground and in a nearby stream,” the SSP said.

In addition to the products, empty bottles and capsules, labels and tools used for conservation, a notebook with notes relating to the purchase and sale of materials, cell phones and precision scales were collected.

Among the medicines found, many were subjected to strict marketing controls, according to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). “In relation to corrosive products, high quantities of nitric, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids have been found. These products are considered highly toxic to the skin, eyes, digestive system and respiratory tract, with the exception of high explosive potential in areas confined of acidic sulfuric acid, in addition to harm to the environment,” the SSP said.

The case was registered as falsification, corruption, adulteration or alteration of a product intended for therapeutic or medicinal purposes, producing toxic substances, other substances harmful to public health and danger to the life or health of others in the XI DP of Campinas. Investigations continue to identify other people involved in the criminal plan.
