Landslides leave dead and missing in Minas Gerais

The storm caused destruction in the Ipatinga region, which declared a state of public disaster. Firefighters have so far recorded seven deaths. Landslides caused by heavy rains that hit the Ipatinga region, in Minas Gerais, caused at least seven deaths and four missing in the early hours of this Sunday (12/01).

“To date there are six dead and four missing in Ipatinga, and one dead in Santana do Paraíso”, writes the government of Minas Gerais in a note.

According to the Minas Gerais fire brigade, the bodies were found buried after the landslide hit homes in the region.

Three bodies were identified among the victims: that of an 8-year-old child, a 70-year-old elderly woman and a 30-year-old man. The firefighters received 58 calls for collapses in the municipality.

Public calamity

Ipatinga municipality declared a state of public disaster after recording 80 millimeters of rain in less than an hour.

Civil protection teams are still working to locate other victims in the rubble. The region is under alert for potential rain danger according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

According to the mayor of Ipatinga, Gustavo Nunes, the rain also flooded the municipality’s Emergency Unit (UPA), making treatment difficult.

“Due to the flooding in the Ipatinga UPA, we must temporarily redirect urgent and emergency care to the health units of the neighboring cities, Coronel Fabriciano and Timóteo,” the municipality wrote in a statement.

The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, in a post on X, announced that he will travel to the city this Monday (13) and asked residents to look for safe places.
