Health History
In August 2024, David Lynch declared in an interview with the magazine Sight and Sound that he could not continue his in-person work as director due to his health conditions.
In fact, he mentioned that he couldn’t leave the house, for fear of contracting Covid. At the time, he stated that he could only walk short distances without lacking oxygen and attributed the condition to the smoking that had been with him for decades.
I have emphysema from smoking for so long, and so I’m stuck at home, whether I like it or not. And now, because of Covid, it would be terrible for me to get sick, even if it’s a cold.
Later, after the enormous repercussion of the interview, he announced on social media that he would be “in great shape, except for the emphysema”.
In a post on his Twitter, he wrote:

I want you to know that I truly appreciate your concern.
With love,
David
