Heralded as a cinematic masterpiece, Brady Corbett’s Brutalist has become one of the critics’ favorites in just a few months. We will compare it to Francis Ford Coppola’s classic, The Godfather. A very serious contender for the next Oscar ceremony, the feature film is currently at the center of controversy following statements by editor David Ianzo.
The latter reveals in an interview Red Shark Newsthat the team used artificial intelligence twice. Partly Hungarian, the film uses the instrument to perfect the actors’ accents. If Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones worked hard with coaches to learn the language, David Ianzo specifies that artificial intelligence makes it possible not to distinguish between native and actors’ accent.
The editor, himself Hungarian, also points out that he used his own voice to create this AI tool. “I speak in a large part of the dialoguehe explains. We wanted to stay as faithful as possible to their interpretations, but it was a matter of getting certain letters right, here and there..”
A taboo subject in Hollywood
Artificial intelligence was also used to create the architectural drawings featured in the film’s epilogue. “Talking about artificial intelligence is offensive in this industryAcknowledges David Janzo. But it should not. We need to be open about these topics, talk about what this tool can bring. Every use of artificial intelligence in this film has been done before. This allows you to go faster.”
No wonder his revelations caused a stir on social media. The use of artificial intelligence was, in part, the basis of the shock that hit Hollywood between May and September 2023. In France it was the dubbing world that raised the alarm about its use.
It’s too early to know if these announcements will affect the film’s Oscar performance. Nominations will be announced on January 23.
