As we reported 15 days ago, the film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, to whom we owe Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Gray with a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh.
The film is set to follow the life of the Rehab and Back to Black singer who started out singing in North London jazz clubs before becoming a music superstar and winning 6 Grammy Awards. He died on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27, due to an overdose of alcohol and drugs.
After his death, Hollywood quickly tried to tell his story, and several projects, including one starring Noomi Rapace, were announced, but none materialized. In 2015, Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy, which traces the life of the icon, won the Oscar for Best Documentary.
Note that Back To Black is produced with the support of Amy Winehouse’s family.
As for Marissa Abela, she’s currently playing Rogue Agent in the UK, with a limited release in the US on August 12th. This film is not yet released in France and has no release date.
