Created, written, produced and directed by Dustin Lance Black (Harvey Milk), who himself grew up in a Mormon household, this mini-series is inspired by very real events. But does his main character really exist?
Contrary to what one might think of such an adaptation, the story of God’s Command is told through the eyes of two entirely fictional characters, Inspector Jeb Peary and his partner Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham), who are not in John Krakauer’s book.
If Dustin Lance Black really met one of the detectives working on the real deal, he asked not to be featured on screen. “It allowed me as a writer to ask myself, ‘Okay, what point of view would help the audience experience this story the way a reader would experience a book?’– said the director Newsweek.
Thus was born the character of Jeb Peary, who puts the events narrated in the mini-series into perspective, as well as the tension experienced by this ardent Mormon between his religion and the terrible reality he must face. “That was my question at the end of the book, and I think that’s what people ask themselves at the end of the series: ‘Now what?’ Dustin explained to Lance Black IndieWire. “I came out of this cave, I left the darkness, I understand everything better – now what do I do?”
