This Monday, 7, is celebrated in Brazil the day of the journalist. The date was chosen in honor of the doctor and journalist Giovanni Battista Libero Badaròmurdered by his critical position in relation to the Empire of Dom Pedro I and in favor of freedom of expression.
The journalist’s day was officialized about 100 years later, in 1931, by the Brazilian Press Association (ABI) to value the professionals who dedicate their lives to investigations and the service to inform the population.
Over the decades, the profession has been known for the challenges, risks, denunciations and ethical dilemmas, characteristics that were much explored in cinema. Here are a list of five films that show behind the scenes of the news.
The Post – The Secret War (2017)
Starred by Meryl Streep (Kay Graham) and Tom Hanks (Ben Bradlee), production is inspired by a real story. In it, professionals from Washington Post discuss the publication of the famous Pentagon Paperssecret documents with revealing information about the United States in the Vietnam War. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and received nominations to Oscar and to Golden Globe.
Spotlight: Secrets Revealed (2015)
With names like Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton, LIEV SCHREIBER What’s more, production follows the dramatic investigation of journalists on the abuse of children by Catholic priests. The story is real, and in 2003, the matter of The Boston Globe won the Pulitzer Award of public service. The film was very well evaluated by critics and won two statuettes from Oscar.
All men of the president (1976)
Also based on facts, the film follows a duo of journalists investigating the Watergate scandal for the newspaper Washington Post. The discoveries of the professionals led to the resignation of the then president Richard Nixon – Inside and outside the big screen.
The True History (2015)
Another production inspired by a real story, the film follows Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill), a journalist from New York Times dismissed for inventing information in a report. So, he is sought by Long Christian (James Franco), a man who seeks to write a book after being accused of murdering his own family.
She said (2022)
The drama portrays the investigation of the scandal of sexual harassment involving the Hollywood tycoon Harvey Weinsteinexposed by two journalists from New York Times. The film follows the two reporters during work to unravel the accusations of countless women against Weinstein while facing a system that has covered abuse for years.
Honorable mentions
Although they are not exactly focused on journalism, many other films bring protagonists working in the press. One of the classics is Superman. The hero disguises Clark Kenta reporter who works in Daily Planet. Another very famous example is Tintin, an adventurous reporter who travels the world in search of exclusive stories and dangerous mysteries.
