A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the Ecuador coast on Friday, reported the European Mediterranean seismological center (EMSC) (EMSC), damaging the buildings in the city of emeralds and temporarily closing part of the oil infrastructure.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 23 km, said EMSC, and the Ecuadorian authorities excluded the possibility of issuing a notice of tsunami.
In a preliminary declaration, the government reported that a person was injured, while several public buildings and private houses were damaged. Some areas have also been affected by food cuts.
President Daniel Noboa, in a publication on the X social media platform, said that the government will work to create shelters, provide humanitarian aid to children and “help with all that our people need”.
The state oil company of Petroecuiter has declared that it has suspended the operations at the Smeraldo refinery and the gas pipeline as a preventive measure after the earthquake, without detailing the possible impact on production.
The Ecuador Geophysical Institute, which had estimated the extent of the 6.0 earthquake, also reported a second earthquake 4.1 minutes later in the province of Guayas.
