“The Year of the Shark”, his new film. “Just Black”, the one that changed everything. His rap debut. His first steps behind the camera. Jean-Pascal Zad comments on videos from the highlights of his career.
“This is the turning point of my life! Everything changed with this movie!”, Jean-Pascal Zad tells us as we return with him to the comedy he co-directed, co-starred, and which won him the 2021 Best Male Newcomer César. And it’s not hard to believe him. Because without that feature film, would he have directed Michel Hazanavicius ( Cut !) and Quentin Dupierre ( Smoking Coughs , in theaters November 30) or been one of the year’s Shark headliners?
It was on the occasion of the release of the new opus of Ludovic and Zoran Bucherma, to whom we owe the story of Teddy and his werewolf, that we met the actor to follow the glorious stages of his career in his company. With videos that did not delay (smiles).
Because in addition to The Year of Shark, Simply Black or Cut! is also his rap debut. Or African Gangster, a direct-to-DVD feature film he made in the early 2010s on a shoestring budget: €20,000. For each passage, Jean-Pascal Zade discusses at length the obstacles and what each of these stages brought him.
Since his Caesar, we note that he is like a fish in water in the powerful worlds. And this is what he confirms to us by invoking the Year of the Shark: “I realize that in France, among directors, there are not 10,000 people who really have a world. And what is powerful about these two guys (…) is that they really have a world.”
“I was even honored to be asked to play in it because it allowed me to discover a mix of professional and non-professional actors (…) There were a lot of elements that were really great and I like to have fun, I thought we could have fun there.”
