A new rebellion for Andor! Although the Star Wars series has moved from August 31st to September 21st on Disney+, we learn that it will only have two seasons in the end. Originally envisioned for five seasons, the series centered on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) was originally shortened to three seasons.
But showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed Andor’s new story plan during Disney+’s press day, which was relayed Deadline. Thus, the Star Wars series will have two seasons of twelve episodes each:
“We’re covering the year in our first 12 episodes that we’ve finished – we’re actually doing the final mix on the 12th episode. We’re going to do another 12 episodes from November and that’s how we’re shooting it. It’s happening in three-episode blocks.”
Had the original five-year plan been maintained, the Star Wars franchise teams would have struggled to cover decades. Therefore, Tony Gilroy’s solution is to reduce Andor and a year of story time for each of the three episode blocks of Season 2.
Especially since the ultimate goal of the Star Wars franchise is to get back on the wagon with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, set between Episodes III and IV, which follows a group of regulars and rebels – including Cassian Andor’s plans to steal the Death Star, the ultimate weapon to destroy the Empire . And the showrunner confirmed that episode 24 “Takes viewers right back to the opening scenes of Rogue One”.
The Rogue One prequel series takes place five years before the dangerous mission on the tropical planet Scarif, and thus follows Cassian Andor on espionage missions for the Rebel Alliance as it begins a resistance against the Galactic Empire.
Andor therefore promises to be highly political and immerse the public in the Machiavellian activities of the Empire. And above all, the Star Wars series will have a special resonance with the contemporary political context and especially with Donald Trump, if we are to believe the actress Fiona Shaw, who confided Empire :
“Tony wrote a great pamphlet on Trump’s world. Our world is exploding in many places right now, people’s rights are disappearing and Andor is a reflection of that, the Empire is taking over and it feels like the same thing is happening. In reality. I was impressed by Tony’s social and down-to-earth intentions. He created a completely A new morality. It is very deep and human – there is sorrow, mourning, hope, fear.”
Andor arrives September 21st on Disney+ for three episodes and will air at a rate of one episode per week thereafter. The rest of the cast includes Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd, Adria Ariona, Denise Goff and Kyle Soler.
