Thor: Chris Hemsworth isn’t the only actor to play him

Did you know Chris Hemsworth wasn’t the only one to portray Thor on the big screen? In the 80s, another actor played the famous superhero. It is said…

Thor on the big screen is obviously Australian Chris Hemsworth, who has been playing the superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011. But while Hammer’s new solo adventure, Love and Thunder, is currently in theaters, it’s fun to remember that he’s not the only actor to have played it on film.

In 1987, Chris Columbus, the future director of Maman, j’ai missed l’avion, Madame Doubtfire and the first two parts of the Harry Potter saga, made his first film, a comedy called Crazy Night. Directed by Elizabeth Shue, the latter in particular has a little girl fascinated by Thor’s character. So enthralled that when she crosses paths with blonde mechanic Dawson, she thinks she’s coming face-to-face with an Asgardian superhero!

The one who portrays Dawson in Crazy Night, and who therefore appears to us in the scene seen through the eyes of the young girl in Thor’s mask, is Vincent D’Onofrio. The American actor shot the film nine months after playing the role Leonard “The Whale” Lawrence in Full Metal Jacket, and it’s impressive that he lost many of the 32 pounds he put on for Kubrick’s film in such a short time.

Years after (or almost) his portrayal of Thor in Crazy Night, Vincent D’Onofrio will forever be working with Marvel. The actor actually slipped into the guise of bad boy Wilson Fisk in Daredevil and Hawkeye.

In Interview with Yahoo MoviesDirector Chris Columbus explained why he chose to set the images in an unconventional way, but still the character of Thor. “In the original script, the little girl was obsessed with characters named He-Man and She-Ra.”he says.

“At that time these heroes meant absolutely nothing to me”The American filmmaker continues. “But I was a huge fan of the Marvel comics and I thought Thor would be an interesting character for a movie, never for a second did I imagine that twenty years later every movie would be based on the comics.”

We’ll end by saying that besides Chris Hemsworth and Vincent D’Onofrio, other actors have interpreted the superhero on screen. Italy’s Bruno Minitti and America’s Zachary T. Bryan, in the humble Thor the Warrior and Thor and the Hammer of the Gods respectively, have indeed held that honor.
