CinemaSeu Jorge about acting on ‘The Best Mother in the World’: ‘I didn’t want them to see the singer’

In an interview with Rolling Stone Brasil, artist talks about deconstruction, female protagonism in set and the challenges of separating art and public image

The best mother in the worldnew feature of Anna Muylaert(What time does she come back?), arrives in Brazilian theaters this Thursday, August 7, bringing Seu Jorge (Marighella) In the figure of Leandroan abusive husband to his wife Gal, lived by Shirley Cruz (The Business Women’s Club).

In conversation with Rolling Stone Brazilthe singer and actor shared the backstage of filming, as it was part of such a feminine project and the effort not to let his fame interfere with the character. Check it out:

Which attracted you to participate in The best mother in the world?

Seu Jorge:Opportunity, right? Another movie, but this was special: only women, only women in charge of a film production. This we have to celebrate. Being there, as the only man in the midst of so many talented people, with so much ability to tell this story … Being chosen by them, being a consensus among them, was a privilege and an honor.

And how was the process of reading and interpretation of the script?

Seu Jorge:It was a space for learning, of deconstruction. A place of empathy, looking at life from the prism of a mother’s pain, a head of a household. The character [da Shirley Cruz] It has an essential profession for citizenship, but it is invisible. We had freedom at the table to exchange impressions. Their listening was very generous.

You appear in the movie discreetly at first – only the voice, the silhouette – and then comes in an impactful moment. What was it like to record this entrance?

Seu Jorge:Everything was very well organized by Dwarf [Muylaert, diretora] and by Lis [Soares, diretora de fotografia]. It was an outdoor area, with a lot of movement: children, pagoda group, barbecue. I had a choreography on the set. It was a choice well thought out by the direction. I entered the scene with everything very clear, the camera positions, the markings. This made it easier. I just had to adapt to the structure they had already designed. They rehearsed everything before, so it was easy to get in the mood, even though it was a scene with two different moods, the party itself and the end of the party.

You play a character that is difficult, even unpleasant. What was it like to build this role?

Seu Jorge:A guy I never did before. Difficult. Really unpleasant. But necessary. I hope the public understands the importance of looking at these stories of urban daily life. I tried to build a distant character from me honestly.

How do you deal with being recognized as a screen singer?

Seu Jorge:Look, this is a fight. Whenever the character is not a musician, and yet he needs to sing, the risk is the audience to see the Seu Jorge There, not the character. I try to avoid this to the fullest. It was like this in the series September morningswhen the director wanted me to sing Milton Nascimento. I played wrongly, purposely, to show that this guy was not an excellent musician.

Has this conflict between singer and character already caused you any misunderstanding?

Seu Jorge:When I did versions of the songs of David Bowie for the movie Marine life with Steve ZissouI took this thing seriously not to look like Seu Jorge. I created new lyrics, took the perfect tuning, played in a simpler way. Only they released the album before the movie left. A lot of people didn’t understand. He even had criticism saying that the album was “a shit.” I was devastated, I pulled away from the project.

But the album became a success …

Seu Jorge:Yes, ironically. Own BowieThen he wrote that he had never imagined that his songs had such beauty – only after hearing my versions. But when he passed away, three days later my father also passed away. My ex-wife, Marianhe said to me, “Do this tribute to them.” Then I did ten shows. They became 17. Then 32. He became a world tour. All this was born from the attempt to hide the singer and show the character.

So, finally, is not the singing of your Jorge’s singing?

Seu Jorge:Exactly. I tried to make the most of the Leandro of Seu Jorge. It is very difficult to go on the scene and sing without looking like myself. So I tried to disguise as much as possible.
