George RR Martin claims to have been “out” in the last seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’

“Back in seasons 5 and 6, but mostly in seasons 7 and 8, I was out of the loop.”

George R. R. Martinauthor of the famous saga of novels ‘Song of ice and fire‘ which gave rise to the unforgettable series of HBOJgame of thrones‘, again distances himself from the ending that upset so many fans, stating that during the last seasons of the series he was not present in the creative decisions.

He assured it in an interview for the New York Times, explaining that the decisions made were far from what he could have planned. The first two batches of ‘Game of Thrones’ almost completely covered the first two volumes of the saga of novels: ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Clash of Kings’, respectively. The following two seasons (3 and 4) would portray the events of the third novel, ‘A Storm of Swords’. From this moment on, that is, with rounds 5 and 6, the television series would include some content from the following two books: ‘A Feast for Crows’ and ‘Dance with Dragons’.

However, in seasons 7 and 8, the series overshadowed Martin’s content. The author has assured that when he concludes his writing of the novels, the outcome will vary in some aspects in relation to the end of the television series. “Back in seasons 5 and 6, but mostly in seasons 7 and 8, I was out of the loop.” affirmed. “Why? You’ll have to ask Dan and David.” (referring to Daniel Weiss and David Benioff, producers of the series).

Big endings have been in my head for years, decades in this case.

Martin is currently involved in the spin-off from ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The House of the Dragon’which opens next August 22 on HBO Max. And, at the same time, developing the following (and last) novels in the saga: ‘Winds of Winter’ and ‘Dream of Spring’.

But, if the ending we have seen is not what its author expected… What will the outcome be in the books?

George RR Martin has given some hint on his website: “Yes, some of the things you’ve seen in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ also happen in ‘The Winds of Winter’ (although not in the same ways…). But most will be different.

After this, he continued adding: “Another question I get asked a lot, especially with the end of ‘Game of Thrones,’ is whether ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ will end the same way. An architect would have a short, concise, simple answer to that. I consider myself more a gardener. My stories grow and evolve as I write them. I know where I’m going. Big endings have been in my head for years, decades in this case. But there are a lot of details, and sometimes the ground under my feet shifts as the words they come up.”

This makes it clear that ‘The Winds of Winter’ remains a work in progress, and Martin refuses to elaborate on it. He nevertheless concluded: “What I have realized is that my gardening is taking me further and further away from the television series. Yes, some of the things seen in the series will be, but most will be different. And really, if you think about it, it’s inevitable.
