At least 17 people were killed in a revolt in a prison in the city of Esmeraldas, in the northern Ecuador, near the Colombian border, the country prison agency said on Thursday.
The authorities lead investigations to clarify what happened, added the agency.
The revolt occurs after another fatal outbreak at the beginning of this week in a prison in the southern Ecuador, where 14 people were killed.
The Ecuador have faced a wave of violence in prisons in recent years, with hundreds of dead prisoners.
The government of President Daniel Noboa, who has promised to repress the crime, blames the bands that compete for the territory and control within the prison system for agitation.
