Depay comments on the theft of his passport after scoring in the defeat of the Netherlands: “it was very tough”

The Corinthians striker also explained how he will return to Brazil without an identity document

Author of one of the goals in the Netherlands’ easy triumph against Malta this Thursday (9), in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, Memphis Depay commented on the problems he faced before the match due to the theft of his passport.

Due to the unpleasant episode, the Corinthians striker missed his flight and had no choice but to show up late. As a result, rumors emerged that he might be left out of the match.

Without participating in a day of training, Depay started from the bench and entered the field in the 22nd minute of the second half. Even so, he found the net in injury time, sealing the score at 4-0.

After the match against the Dutch, the Corinthians number 10 declared that he had to expend “more energy”. And he explained what his next steps will be upon returning to Brazil.

“I asked for a new one, so I’ll have to wait a bit. I hope everything is well organised. The Brazilian embassy will give me another passport. I have an emergency one for my return. But it was very hard, extra energy which wasn’t nice. However, in the end, it’s always worth it. The KNVB (Dutch Football Federation) also helped me with this,” underlined the player.

Leaving his against Malta, Memphis Depay reaches 53 goals and remains firmly the greatest scorer in the history of the Dutch national team.
