Released by Ace Frehleylegendary guitarist of Kiss who died this Thursday, 16, at the age of 74, the album Origins Vol. 1 — from April 2016 — features the artist covering songs by Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, ThinLizzy and other artists who have inspired him over the years. The album also marked his first recording with Paul Stanley in almost two decades: a passionate interpretation of “Fire and Water”, from Free. (Other guests on the album include Slash, Mike McCreadyfrom Pearl Jam, Lita Ford and John 5guitarist of Rob Zombie). At the time, the Rolling Stone asked to Ace choose five songs he would like to have written. See below:
The Who – “My Generation”
“It was the first Who song that really hooked me. I can’t think of another rock song where the bass player takes the solo.”
Led Zeppelin – “Stairway to Heaven”
“This is Jimmy Page at his peak. I don’t even know how to categorize this song. Maybe it belongs in a category of its own.”
Kiss – “Deuce”
“That was the first song Gene, Paul and Peter played when I walked in to audition. It grabs your attention immediately.”
Cream – “White Room”
“Cream had a huge influence on my playing. This is a classic wah-wah song. I would play it on my next tour, but I don’t use pedals — I might trip over them.”
Thin Lizzy – “Emerald”
“It’s a very heavy song, which simply overwhelms, with an incredible section in which two guitars play the harmony part in unison. It has a sensational atmosphere.”
