Jason Momoa prepares a film about “Father of Surfing” and Hawaiian Olympic champion

Actor Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”) will produce the biography of Duke Kahanamoku, a legendary Hawaiian Olympic swimmer.

Kahanamoku broke racial stereotypes by competing in the 1912, 1920, 1924 and 1932 Olympic Games and winning a total of five medals.

In addition to his success as a swimmer, Kahanamoku is also credited with popularizing surfing as a sport, being regarded as the “father of modern surfing”. There are also those who argue that wave sport would not exist without it.

Screenwriter Chris Kekaniokalani Bright was hired to write the biography. Bright has no credits for the script yet, but he came to industry attention after his screenplay “Conviction” entered the Black List, the informal list of Hollywood’s best non-filmed screenplays, in 2018.

It is unknown if the film will focus solely on Kahanamoku’s career as a swimmer or if it will show events in his life after his retirement from the sport. Kahanamoku worked as a gas station manager in Hawaii and served as a sheriff in Honolulu for nearly 30 years. He died in January 1968, at the age of 77, of a heart attack.

Momoa will produce the film in collaboration with Peter Safran (“The Suicide Squad”). Interestingly, this isn’t the only Kahanamoku project Momoa is involved in. The actor narrated the documentary “Waterman – Duke: Ambassador of Aloha”, about the life of the athlete.

The biopic does not yet have a title, schedule and scheduled preview date.

Jason Momoa has several projects in the pipeline, including “Aquaman 2”, which hits theaters in March 2023, and the tenth film in the “Fast & Furious” series, due out in May 2023.
