Stephen Miller promulgated several insults after the filmmaker accused him of Nazism, reflecting the growing political-cultural polarization in the USA

Winner of Oscar of Best Actor put Raging Bull (1980), Robert De Niro is considered one of the most influential actors and filmmakers of his generation. At 82, he is a longtime critic of donald trump.

In the program The Weekend on Sundayfrom MSNBC, last Sunday, the 19th, the actor started a controversy. He suggested that Trump will want to remain in the presidency when his second term ends, and has expressed concern about this possibility.

“He set everything up, I think Stephen Miller and the Goebbels of the Cabinet”, he said, in reference to Joseph GoebbelsMinister of Propaganda of Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany. “He’s a Nazi, yes, and he’s a Jew. He should be ashamed of himself”, he added about Miller (via NME).

Stephen Milleran American far-right political activist, was a senior advisor to the President of the United States during the first term of Trump and is now Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Policy at the White House. On October 22nd, Miller was asked about the comments of De Niro in the program Fox, Hannity. However, instead of combating the accusations made, he expressed several offenses against the filmmaker’s work.

Robert De Niro He’s a sad, bitter, broken old man who’s mostly enraged because he hasn’t made a film worth watching in at least 30 years,” he insulted.

During the aforementioned period, De Niro starred in a number of critically acclaimed films such as The Good Side of Life (2012), Cheating (2013) , Joker (2019) and The Irishman (2019). The actor also received nominations for Oscar, BAFTA, SAG Award and Golden Globe for his role in Rua das Flores Murderer (2024), from Martin Scorsese.

Miller continued, saying, “This man has been degrading himself on camera with one horrible movie after another for my entire adult life, and no one takes him seriously. Not his family, not his friends, not his community. He’s just a shadow of a man and everyone ignores everything he says.”

Interestingly, a profile of Miller in 2020 Vanity Fair revealed that he had framed posters of two De Niro films, Casino (1995) and The Good Companions (1990), on the wall of his room when he was a teenager. The Daily Beast portal also mentioned that, in the past, the politician had said that Casino It would be your favorite movie.

De Niro’s positioning

Amid the worsening political climate in the United States, the clash between De Niro and Miller highlights the growing tensions between artists and the Trump administration.

In May 2025, during the opening ceremony of the 78th edition of the Film Festival Cannesin France, De Niro had already stated that the US president represented a global threat. “In my country, we fight hard for the democracy that we once took for granted. This affects all of us here, because art is the crucible that brings people together, like tonight. Art seeks truth. Art embraces diversity. That’s why art is a threat,” he declared in a speech.

He continued to provide extensive commentary on the decisions of Trump towards the arts and freedom of expression. “The philistine president of the United States has appointed himself head of one of our main cultural institutions [o Kennedy Center]. He has cut funding and support for the arts, humanities and education.”

Other statements by the actor reinforced his critical stance towards the current US administration. After the movement’s protests No Kings last weekend when more than seven million people in all 50 states took to the streets against Trump and its policies —, De Niro urged Americans to keep fighting. “There is no other way to stand up to a bully,” he noted. “You have to face him and fight until the end.”

In the interview with The Weekendhe concluded: “Trump He doesn’t understand anything about humanity, guys,” he said. “He has no empathy. I don’t know where — what he is, but he’s an alien and he wants to harm this country.”
