Yellowstone: After Kevin Costner, another mainstay of the Western franchise is leaving

The page is turning at Paramount. After ten years of collaboration, Taylor Sheridan is preparing to leave the company that made him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after screenwriters thanks to the success of the Yellowstone series. our colleagues Diversity Announce that Sheridan will leave Paramount to join the NBCUniversal group in 2028, when his current contract expires.

The departure is related to the takeover of the studios by the company Skydance. The new management of the group has already started implementing budget restrictions. Among the top-grossing series on the Paramount+ platform, the Taylor Sheridan series were not spared by this new directive, despite their enormous success.

The uncertain future of the Yellowstone franchise

The co-creator of Yellowstone, the American screenwriter also works on franchise spin-offs, as well as other highly popular series such as Landman, Tulsa King and Lioness: Special Operations. In all, Sheridan has overseen about ten productions as producer or screenwriter.

The details of the new contract that awaits him at NBCUniversal are not yet known, but there is no doubt that he will receive a salary of several hundred million dollars. The Peacock group’s platform is not available in France, but hopes of its arrival here by 2028 are not lost.

We also don’t know what impact this team change will have on the future of the Yellowstone franchise. Four series were already in production (The Madison, The Dutton Ranch, Y: Marshals, 1944, etc.), and other projects were more or less advanced in development (a spin-off of 6666, which was supposed to be filmed at the Sheridan Ranch in Texas).

Where does the new Yellowstone series go after 2028?

Sheridan’s departure to Universal doesn’t mean he can’t continue producing those series. However, it is less certain that he will be able to continue the active supervision of those who are used to controlling everything without delegating anything (he wrote or co-wrote every episode of the 5th season of Yellowstone). It is also conceivable that the next spin-offs, which will see the light of day from 2028, will not change their broadcast platform.

One thing is for sure: nothing will ever be the same for Paramount+. Fortunately, the platform can count on the arrival of new talent, including Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), who will soon be leaving Netflix. This upcoming arrival of Taylor Sheridan also heralds a change of era for NBCUniversal and Peacock’s platform…
