A skincare technique that went viral after promising peachy skin divides opinion: Called a “skincare sandwich,” the method involves layers of hydration to boost active ingredients like vitamin C and retinol. But is this news for everyone? Discover the risks and secrets of a “beauty bun” that really works.




Have you ever heard of it skin care bun? Despite bearing the name of one of the most popular snacks in the worldit has nothing to do with sandwich food. It’s about one of the many beauty trends that have gone viral on TikTok: The technique aims to “encapsulate” active ingredients between hydrating layers to optimize moisture retention and reduce irritation.

In theory, the idea is simple: just apply to light layer of moisturizer or water-based product first the active ingredient, followed by the ingredient itself (such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid or retinol), and finishing with a thicker moisturizer to seal it all in, which they create a protective ‘sandwich’ on the skin.

And is this really anything new? It works for all skin types? Although it seems innovative, experts point out that this concept has been circulating among dermatologists for years.

Al Pure peopledermatologist Marcella Alves, from the Onne Clinic (RJ), explains in detail everything you need to know before joining (or not) this new trend.

“The method can be adapted to different skin types, but is not suitable for everyone. People with active rosacea, atopic dermatitis, extremely sensitive skin or compromised skin barrier should be cautious, as applying multiple layers can increase irritation,” warns the expert.
