Ally McBeal: New information on the continuation of the iconic series

Almost 20 years after the last episode aired, Ellie McBeal is set to mark her big return to television. According to exclusive information DeadlineABC is in full development on a sequel to the 2000s cult series created by David E. by Kelly and worn by Calista Flockhart.

Written and produced by Karin Gist, a screenwriter who worked on Grey’s Anatomy and Camp Rock, among others, the sequel follows a young black woman fresh out of law school who joins the original series’ law firm. Also according to Deadline, the character will be the daughter of Renee Reddick, a roommate of Ellie McBeal, played by Lisa Nicole Carson.

Calista Flockhart has reportedly been approached to reprise her role as well as executive produce the show. However, he won’t make a decision on potential participation until the scripts are written.

David E. Kelly, who has had a prolific career since Ali McBeal’s hiatus, notably Big Little Lies, would have given his blessing to the sequel, but was reluctant to take part in the project. He actually preferred to step back to give Karin Gies the chance to tell this new character’s story in her own way. As of now, Kelly is not expected to be involved in the sequel.

20th Century Fox Television has been trying to revive Ali McBeal for several years now. In March 2021, TVLine announced that a mini-series sequel was in the works. At that time, the project was not attached to any television channel. So we have to believe that Karin Gist’s version was well received by ABC, who decided to give this sequel a chance.

Running on Fox from 1997 to 2002, Ally McBeal followed the sentimental plight of a brilliant lawyer working at the Boston Cage and Fish firm with her ex-lover and his wife. Quickly becoming a pop culture phenomenon, the series won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1999, as well as two Golden Globes in the same category in 1997 and 1998.

In addition to Calista Flockhart, the series also featured actors such as Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Elementary), Courtney Thorne-Smith (Melrose Place), Greg German (Grey’s Anatomy), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Peter McNicol (Numb3rs) and Portia De. Ross (Arrested Development). The series also welcomed Robert Downey Jr., aka Iron Man, in Season 4, who played one of the lawyer’s lovers.
