Analysis: Rarely, ‘Mars One’ makes you laugh, cry and think

What is most enchanting about Mars One is its vivid portrayal of the intimacy of these ordinary people, people like all of us

mars oneby Gabriel Martins, has that rare quality of moving, making people laugh, cry and, at the same time, offering reflections to the illustrious audience.

Like his colleagues at the Filmes de Plástico production company, Gabriel sets his work in Contagem, Greater Belo Horizonte. The tone is naturalistic, simple. The well crafted dialogues sound natural, the way people speak, in a delightful mineirês. Contagem is his microcosm, his world, the place where he has his feet on the ground – in the sense that Tolstoy recommended that, to be universal, an artist must only portray the village of him.

De Contagem also glimpses the universe, as one of his characters is the boy fascinated by astronomy. The Martins family (the same surname of the director, not surprisingly), is made up of the father, Wellington (Carlos Francisco), the mother, Térsia (Rejane Faria), and the couple of children, the adolescent Deivinho (Cícero Lucas) and Eunice (Camilla Damião).

His father, caretaker of a building in Belo Horizonte, dreams of a future as a footballer for Deivinho. His mother is a maid. The boy plays football, but his mind is always tuned to science. Law student Eunice devises a way to tell her parents that she is looking for an apartment to live with someone else.

Here it is: a family like many in Brazil. We live in the year 2018, when the far-right president is elected, contrary to the wishes of this simple family. The political reference, however, does not establish a causal, mechanical link between the dysfunctional president and the problems that are beginning to manifest themselves. It is more the widespread feeling of a toxic environment taking place and starting to affect everyone’s life.

However, what I love most mars one is his vivid portrait of the intimacy of these ordinary people, people like all of us. Gradually – and that’s because of the finely tuned script, the confident pace and direction, as well as the cast -, we feel part of that family. Laugh with them or touch us when they face difficulties.

The film has humor and love, as well as a lot of music. Everything about him is true, this effect always sought after by the cinema and rare to find. In the struggle for life, tenderness wins.
