There have been several blockbusters in the history of cinema, but in the last 30 years a long list of films has reached the figure of 1 billion dollars grossed globally. But which are the best on this list?
By removing films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Collider compiled a list to find the most critically and publicly acclaimed films among those who earned the most for their studies at the box office. For this reason, the evaluations of Rotten Tomatoes, a site specialized in pointing out what critics (Tomatometer) and the public think of a film (Audience Score), were used.
So let’s go to the best films among the most profitable in history:
Jurassic World: World of Dinosaurs (2015)
Fans of the “Jurassic Park” trilogy waited 14 years and filled theaters to see the return of the dinosaur franchise with “Jurassic World”. With a more secure place to avoid the mistakes of its predecessors, the scientists of “Jurassic World” just did not count on the evolution of the strength and intelligence of the now genetically modified creatures.
The film surpassed “Fast & Furious 7,” released the same year (and which appears further down the list) in the race for who would hit the billion dollar mark in the shortest time. According to Deadline magazine, the film took just 13 days in theaters to hit the mark. “Jurassic World” earned a 71% critical approval rating and a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is available in Brazil via Telecine.
Avatar (2009)
“Avatar” will return to theaters in late September to remind audiences of the film’s story, with “Avatar: The Way of Water” due out in December.
The film follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic former marine who ends up on Pandora, brought there to gather information about the planet’s blue natives. Sully adapts to each other and increasingly discovers who the real threat is.
In addition to surpassing $ 1 billion, “Avatar” came closest to triple that at the box office. The film was approved by 81% of critics and 82% of the public on Rotten Tomatoes.
Until recently, the film was available on Disney +, but was removed from the platform ahead of its re-release in theaters on September 22.
Fast and furious 7
Part of one of the most profitable franchises in the world, “Fast and Furious 7” picks up the events of its predecessor, in which the brother of a member of the organization, killed in the previous film, makes the search for Dom’s team his mission.
“Fast and Furious 7” is the first film in the series to reach $ 1 billion, which it did, according to THR, in just 17 days. The film received 81% critical approval and 82% Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
To see the film in Brazil, all you need is access to Star +;
Titanic (1997)
Critical acclaim for “Titanic” was already clear from the film’s performance at the awards ceremony, which led to it winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, in 1998. The film features Rose Dewitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) who chronicles the story of how he met and fell in love with Jack Dawson aboard the historic ship Titanic.
The film reached over $ 1 billion at the box office and earned an 87% critical approval rating, while 69% of the audience approved the film according to Rotten Tomatoes.
In Brazil, “Titanic” is available on Star +.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
The conclusion of another great franchise is also part of this list, concluding the story of the trio of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) as they try to finish destroying the Horcruxes to defeat the only one. -who-will-not-be-named.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” was the first in the franchise to exceed $ 1 billion at the box office. Critics extensively approved of the film, with a 96% rating on the Tomatometer and an 89% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is available on HBO Max.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
The last film on the list is “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has just left theaters and is starting to be made available upon request for rent. It is the sequel to the 1986 classic “Top Gun: Wild Aces,” which follows Tom Cruise’s character Maverick on his mission to mentor a new team of young pilots.
“Top Gun: Maverick” was the first Tom Cruise film to exceed $ 1 billion at the box office and garnered a 96% critical approval rating, as well as an impressive 99% audience score, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is now available for rental on select platforms.
