With Love and Perseverance: The Child of the Stars Is Hidden in This Movie With Vincent Lyndon and Juliette Binoche

Adapted from the novel by Christine Angotti

Lovingly and mercilessly adapted from Christine Angotti’s novel, A Turning Point in Life. This is the second time, following 2017’s beautiful Interior Sun, that Claire Danes has collaborated with a novelist to write a screenplay. The director explains:

Working with Christine was a little different this time. It was not to write ex nihilo, but to adapt one of his novels, a turning point in life. In addition, and this is nothing, this project formed the beginning of the pandemic.

“Like many, we were at home, like under house arrest. So Christine and I were working. It’s a bit strange to say, but it’s true: this film exists because of imprisonment.”

A cast of regulars

Claire Denis has already played Vincent Lyndon in Les Bastards (2013) and Friday Night (2002). He also teamed up with Juliette Binoche after High Life (2018) and A Beautiful Interior Sun (2017). Finally, he also called his favorite actor Grégoire Colin, who starred in Les Bastards, Beau travail (1999), Nénette et Boni (1996), 35 rhums (2008), L’Intrus (2004) and Friday Night.

Shooting at the Maison de la Radio

with love and determination Filmed in Paris, specifically at the Maison de la Radio, as Sarah’s character works for Radio France Internationale (RFI), a French public service station interested in news from around the world.

New main operator

On Avec amour et acharnement, Claire Denis works for the first time with experienced cinematographer Eric Gauthier (in the wild), whom she has known for many years. The filmmaker confides, “The agreement between us was to approach each other side by side, very close to the closeness of this trio.”

“It’s very awkward to get close, but the apartment we were shooting in, with its relative gravity, drew Eric and I closer. And during one night of filming, from this scene of the fight between Sarah and Jean, we immersed ourselves. In this screaming match from We all came out without blood.”

Hannah Magimel

Note the casting of Hannah Magimel, daughter of Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel (who met on the set of Children of the Century in 1999). At the age of 22, he took his first steps in cinema in Avec Amour et acharnement.
