Cate Blanchett’s new film gets a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival

Cate Blanchett’s new film (“Nightmare Alley”) received a standing ovation for six minutes after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday evening (1/9). Entitled “Tár”, the work marks the return of director Todd Field 16 years after the release of his previous film, “Intimate Sins” (2006).

In the storyline, Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a gay and tyrannical conductor who has become the first woman to conduct a major German orchestra, but finds herself in the crosshairs of a #MeToo movement scandal.

During the press conference, Blanchett said the role “seemed urgent and undeniable,” but said he didn’t even think about his character’s gender or sexuality. “I love it in the film. It’s a very human portrait. And I think we’ve matured enough as a species for that to happen. [sexualidade] not be a title or a question. I found it very exciting. “

“While there are a lot of hot topics that come up in this film, the film is not about any of those things,” he said, referring to the #MeToo theme. “They are plot gimmicks. The film was made in the time we live in. There are a lot of explosive things in the films – I don’t want to sound too arrogant – but it’s so much more existential.”

The director, who also wrote the script, explained that the role “wasn’t written with Cate Blanchett in mind, it was written for Cate Blanchett.” In preparation for the role, Blanchett learned how to speak German, play the piano and conduct an orchestra on her own.

All this dedication should bear fruit. Critics of the film point out the actress’s work, many of whom point out that she should get her eighth Oscar nomination – and possibly her third win after “The Aviator” (2005) and “Blue Jasmine” (2014). .

The cast also includes Nina Hoss (“My Sister”), Noémie Merlant (“Portrait of a Young Woman on Fire”), Julian Glover (“Game of Thrones”), Mark Strong (“Shazam!”) And Allan Corduner ( “Homeland”).

“Tár” does not yet have a premiere date in Brazil. Watch the movie trailer.
