“Why is there a giant statue of a guy coming out of the ocean?”
Spoilers for ‘She-Hulk’ up to Chapter 2
Tatiana Maslany continues to show her muscles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘She-Hulk: Lawyer Hulka’, and although the nine-part series created by Jessica Gao has only aired 3 episodes, Jennifer Walters is already positioning herself as a crucial gear in the future of the MCU in Phase 4.
The MCU is full of plot holes, but Chapter 2 of the series attempts to clear up a (literally) giant one. It’s actually an instant that references several things, including the first official mention of Wolverine in the MCU. Therefore, it is understandable that we did not look at the next one until now.
If the fact that Jen is Bruce Banner/Hulk’s (Mark Ruffalo) cousin wasn’t enough, we’ve seen She-Hulk tie into the mainstream MCU with references to Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, and even Captain America’s virginity. ‘Superhuman Law’ went a step further with the return of Tim Roth’s Abomination, Jen’s new assignment, who must defend him.
But far from a direct link to Louis Leterrier’s forgotten ‘The Incredible Hulk’, did you see a nod to ‘Eternals’?
Given She-Hulk’s location toward the end of the present timeline, this post-‘Endgame’ adventure has already faced threats from the Ten Rings, the Celestials, Gorr the Butcher, and the arrival of Kang the Conqueror. .
While most of these events occurred separately, in the wide world together someone should mention them. Despite assembling an entirely new team of heroes alongside the New Avengers, the Young Avengers, the Thunderbolts, and the Illuminati, Chloé Zhao’s ensemble film has remained largely isolated. That has been the case until a ‘She-Hulk’ easter-egg made a direct reference to the end of ‘Eternals’.

During a scene in ‘She-Hulk,’ there is a short snippet of a website titled “10 Quirky Jobs for a Fresh Start” on Jen’s computer. Scrolling through, we see a number of linked articles to read next. Along with a joke at the expense of the maligned ‘Iron Man 3,’ there’s the aforementioned confirmation that Wolverine already exists in the MCU and a headline that reads, “Why is there a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean.”
For those who haven’t yet put the pieces together, the “giant statue” in the ocean speaks to when the Eternals banded together to prevent the Celestial known as Tiamut from being born within the Earth.
‘Eternals’ established that for a Celestial to hatch, it has the cost of whatever planet they hatch from, like a chicken from an egg. Although Sersi (Gemma Chan) and company. managed to stop the emergence, a half-emerged Tiamut froze as it protruded from the Indian Ocean.
Until now, many saw it as a plot hole where no one had noticed a deity peering into the sky. Other events like Doctor Strange’s spell on Spider-Man and the Snap have been mentioned, so we’d think that Thor or Captain Marvel, at the very least, might have made some joke about, say, adrenaline junkies trying to climb. Tiamut’s hand.
Some Marvel fans can be notoriously picky, and whether She-Hulk’s easter-egg was placed there to appease critics or as an actual part of a larger story remains to be seen. Some think the effects of the Celestial’s rise include triggering earthquakes and tsunamis that could tie into ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and whatever moves Tenoch Huerta’s Namor from the depths of Atlantis.
We know that Marvel likes to prepare things in advance. As for Tiamut’s petrified corpse, it is literally a Celestial, not an elephant, in the room.
‘Eternals 2’ has already been spoiled by Patton Oswalt, and as Chan, Brian Tyree Henry and the rest prepare for the inevitable sequel with Harry Styles, there are sure to be more momentous consequences. The last time we left the team, Arishem took them and used them as toys to decide if humanity is worth saving.
Still, we’re no closer to finding out if anyone remembers the colossal Arishem that appeared in the sky, and the larger effects of what having a Celestial as a tourist attraction in the Indian Ocean can do for life on Earth. To be honest, along with a hammer-wielding Asgardian, Willem Dafoe in a flying glider, and Morris in Shang-Chi, Tiamut is a point of interest that isn’t the strangest thing going on in the MCU right now.
For now, we’re wondering if Jen Walters clicked to see why there’s a giant statue out there, or if she’s content defending supervillains in court.
